Clinical Practice & Policy: Navigation Guide Strategy

Strategy

The next phase in our collaborative effort to radically advance the field of translation in environmental health is a 3-pronged strategy to:

  1. Apply the Navigation Guide to multiple chemicals to establish proof of concept;
  2. Advance uptake of the Navigation Guide to key decision-makers through outreach, education, and dissemination. Notably, it is an opportune time to accelerate the uptake of the Navigation Guide, as its publication coincides with growing pressure on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to incorporate systematic approaches; and
  3. Conduct research to advance knowledge of several factors that are assessed in the application of the Navigation Guide, i.e. the influence of for-profit funding on the evidence stream, the availability of safer alternatives, and identification of patient and community values and preferences.

Approach

Our 3-pronged strategy will be implemented by the Navigating the Science Work Group, an interdisciplinary and inter-agency collaboration of established and new partners. PRHE’s established partners who have been actively engaged in development and uptake of the Navigation Guide include:

  • UCSF Cochrane Working Group Collaborators;
  • American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists District IX;
  • UCSF From Advancing Science to Ensuring Prevention (FASTEP) Alliance, including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Physicians for Social Responsibility and Collaborative on Health and the Environment;
  • European Environmental Agency;
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - Office of Research and Development; Office of Children’s Health Protection; and Office of Policy;
  • U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP), Office of Health Assessment and Translation;
  • California Environmental Protection Agency Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment;
  • California Department of Public Health, Hazard Evaluation System and Information Service; and
  • Milbank Memorial Fund (through participation of its President Emeritus).

Our existing partners are co-authors of the Navigation Guide and/or serve as advisors. We are also currently working with some partners, such as the U.S. EPA and NTP, to apply the methodology to perfluorinated compounds for pilot testing. We are also currently in the process of establishing these existing partners more formally as the Navigating the Science Work Group that will oversee implementation of the 3-pronged strategy.
