Dr. Knight with her dry patient and the patient's beautiful baby.
Dr. Korn, a sleepy baby and a very happy, dry Mom.
Drs. Knight and Korn are currently working at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. The name of the teaching hospital affiliated with the university is Mulago hospital. They are joined by UCSF ObGyn colleagues, Drs. Meg Autry, Felicia Lester and Nam Tran.
The goals at Mulago hospital differ slightly and even more exciting in some ways. This is an excellent academic department but, they are overwhelmed by the volume (about 32,000 deliveries a year). At a recent morning report there were approximately 120 deliveries in 24 hours, 23 c-sections and much morbidity from illegal abortions, pre-eclampsia, infection, and many other things.
One of the primary goals is teaching, particularly surgical skills training. The team is also helping to figure out ways to improve clinical care, which involves thinking about infrastructure, triage, etc. Our team hopes to build a long-standing collaboration between UCSF ObGyn and ObGyn at Mulago hospital.
